Hold the “Python” on the Everglades Pizza
By Rocky Thompson on December 11th, 2012After you win first place in the python-whacking contest in Florida, you might be tempted to spend some of that $1500 on a famous Everglades Pizza featuring frog legs, gator meat, and ground python. Know that the Everglades’ superintendent highly recommends against doing so. “For some reason, the pythons that are coming out of here, they have mercury concentrations higher than mine waste, a mercury mine.” It’s unknown whether the mercury is naturally occurring in the pythons or if it’s caused by coal burning plants, or if pythons just aren’t very good at breaking down mercury, but in any case, they’re more polluted that the waste that actually comes out of mercury mines. That’s a good place to draw the line. Make sure to pack your hazmat suit for the whacking contest.
