When You Get High, Carbs are the Only Thing That’ll Do
By Steve Casimiro on December 7th, 2012
Fat packs more calories per gram than carbohydrates, but carbs are 15 percent more efficient for the same amount of oxygen, and mice living at high altitudes in the Andes thrive by getting more of their food from carbs, according to a new study. The theory that high-altitude creatures would favor a carb-rich diet was first proposed more than 30 years ago, but only now has it been proven with the testing of two species of mice from the Peruvian Andes and two from sea level. At 4,000 meters, there’s about 40 percent less oxygen than at sea level. Via Science Daily.
