Vail Drops $20 Million to Buy Two More Resorts

By Steve Casimiro on December 7th, 2012

Despite losing a cool $60 million in the first quarter of its fiscal year, August-October, Vail is spending $20 million to buy two Midwestern resorts — Afton Alps in Minnesota and Mount Brighton in Michigan. Afton serves the Twin Cities, which Vail says has a skier base of 161,000 sliders, and Mt. Brighton is close to Detroit, which has 307,000. The plan, Vail says, it to pump up the season pass sale programs that have been so popular in snow country, beef up the terrain parks and other amenities, and use the smaller hills as feeders to Vail many other mountains.
