New York’s Newest Ski Area is in Queens

By Michael Frank on October 23rd, 2012

The biggest threat to skiing in the long term may be global climate change, but a bigger near-term threat is demographics. The current generation of kids isn’t skiing or picking up the sport from parents. So Sugarbush is hoping to literally bring the mountain to the city, setting up an artificial ski hill on a sloping park in Queens, New York, for up to six weeks. Lessons for kids would be free, though they’d have to sign up in advance. Queens officials already voted yes though there are some NYC Parks hurdles yet to clear. The smart money is on Sugarbush’s CEO Win Smith to make it happen; he’s a former exec at Merrill Lynch and knows the power of branding in the world’s biggest media market. Via Queens Chronicle.
