Surfing Screen Test: ‘Chasing Mavericks’ Up for Review

By Steve Casimiro on October 22nd, 2012

Will Hollywood finally get surfing right with the new Jay Moriarty bio-pic, Chasing Mavericks? No less than Mavericks big-wave pioneer Jeff Clark says yes, that a mainstream movie has achieved “an accurate Hollywood portrayal of surfers and surfing.” Two of the producers on the film are surfers themselves, and they brought in noted big wave chargers Greg Long and Peter Mel with small parts in the movie, plus hired surfer and documentarian Grant Washburn as a consultant on editing and other matters. Everyone connected with the film says the goal was to be true to Moriarty, the surfing phenom and Santa Cruz local who died at age 22 in a diving accident, and to the sport itself. Come October 26, when it opens, you can judge for yourself. Via NY Times.
