Wildfires Ruining Whitewater Rafting Businesses

By Rocky Thompson on August 20th, 2012

The height of tourist season in Idaho happened to coincide with the height of wildfire season. In central Idaho the river businesses are dealing with nothing but cancellations. To be fair, 300 rafters on the Salmon were stranded this week, but not by wildfire, a falling rock closed the only road into the site. So we could say that falling rock season has just as much to do with it as fires.

Good news though, a new study has found that more Americans participated in outdoor recreation (pdf) last year, the first jump in 30 years. But as these wildfires unleash mayhem on a regular seasonal basis across the West as the result of changing climate, next year’s not looking so bright.

A number of road closures recently are due to falling rock– because of wildfires. It’s not necessarily either/or.
