23-Year-Old Man Texts for Rescue from Theodore Roosevelt National Park
By Rocky Thompson on August 13th, 2012People I know in college now don’t use their phones for talking. Take this 23-year-old hiker who was making his way through Theodore Roosevelt National Park. He left well prepared but managed to lose a water bottle in 96F-heat and succumb to extraordinary dehydration. Did he call 911? No, the man texted for help. Don’t get me wrong, I often prefer text message as a way to communicate, but if it’s a life-and-death situation, I’m going to recommend you go with the immediacy of a phone call. The good news is that this man was found by a couple searchers on horseback a few hours after his text.

I disagree, text message are lot easy to go through, if you have a bad reception.
It also could be that he tried to call but did not have enough signal strength to get the call out. More than once I have had bad enough reception and had text messages work when phone calls would not work.
These guys beat me to it. There are times when sending a text works when making a call doesn’t. I’m guessing he tried to call first.
