French Resort Ponders Removing Ski Lifts Due to Climate Change
By Rocky Thompson on August 6th, 2012The mayor of a small French town on a mid-Alps resort has proposed the removal of all the ski lifts to promote cross country skiing, mountain biking, and hiking. “There are lots of things to do in the mountains without having cables hanging over our heads. People will come, I have no fear of that,” he said. The resort loses about $184k each year, and does significantly worse when the snow doesn’t fly. His logic is that they’ll have to take down the lifts in a few years anyway since they’ll no longer be getting enough snow to justify staying open as a ski resort, so they could get ahead of the curve and re-brand itself now.
