World’s Tallest Indoor Climbing Gym Could Be In…the Bronx

By Steve Casimiro on June 29th, 2012

The Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx is sitting empty and developers are lining up for the right to turn it into a destination. One of the two leading candidates is Young Woo & Associates, which has partnered with gym Brooklyn Boulders to propose the massive climbing project. Its rival also is building on superlatives: Wall Street banker Kevin Parker wants to turn the fortress into the world’s largest ice complex, with nine hockey rinks. Either would be an improvement over the project pushed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and rejected by the city council — a big box shopping mall. A decision could come by next month. A climbing gym large enough to house 9 hockey rinks would be an absolute wonderland.
