In China, They Should (Maybe) Kill the Electric Car.

That’s because electric cars there are, essentially, burning coal, since they’re juiced by coal-burning power plants — some 80 percent of China’s electricity comes from coal. The irony: cars that burn gasoline are polluting far less. Researchers looked at 34 Chinese cities and five vehicle technologies and emphasized that if alternatives to coal can be found, the EVs will be much cleaner.

Well, Mr. America. 45% of US electricity is generated by coal as well, and we use 5 to 6 times more electricity than the Chinese. So by my rough calculation we generated 3 times more coal related pollution than the Chinese. Adding onto how much we drive vs the Chinese, maybe we should kill the electric car too.
i’ve heard arguments that due to the relative efficiency of the electric motor vs gas motors, that even electric cars fed by coal produced electricity are still cleaner in the big picture than a gas car. This seems to claim the opposite. How to know?!
