Hunter Mistakes Horse for Deer
By Rocky Thompson on February 24th, 2012Be glad you weren’t riding your bike anywhere near the Assateague Island National Seashore this time last year. A confused hunter took down a 28-year-old mare that he mistook for a deer during a two-day deer hunt held on the national park’s land. He was fined $5k, put on probation for 18 months, and banned from hunting on federal lands ever again after his trial last week. The hunter’s heart must have been hammering when he pulled that trigger. I’m sure he’d never seen such a huge deer in his life.

Assateague’s ponies are pretty small, actually.
