Recycle 25 Million Lbs of Mardi Gras Beads? Yeah, Right
By Steve Casimiro, Adventure Journal on February 17th, 2012
Mardis Gras produces 25 million pounds of plastic beads each year, none of which can be processed by traditional recycling centers. And New Orleans, no surprise, isn’t exactly rushing to find a way to reduce, reuse, or recycle. But some are trying to make a dent. “This year, an unprecedented crop of initiatives has sprung up to help feed the recycled bead market, with most of the ideas as idiosyncratic as the city itself,” reports the LA Times. One idea: a trailer that follows parades and asks revelers to toss their beads back. Yes, well, ahem. Good luck with that.
