Paddlin’ Down the Congo, Just Paddlin’ Down the Congo
By Michael Frank, Adventure Journal on February 14th, 2012
After 14 years of dreaming, Phil Harwood completed the first canoe trip down the entire 3,000-mile length of the Congo River from source to sea. He’s just completed a book about his adventure, filled with all sorts of harrowing moments, from navigational panic trying not to get swept over rapids, to fending off crocodiles and snakes with his paddle. Had it not been for the kindness of strangers, he might’ve been killed by not-so-kind strangers. In this interview on the BBC (it’s the second story in the audio clip) you can hear just what got him through: his sense of humor and dauntlessly good cheer…and the fact that he’s an ex British Royal Marine.
