Vermont is the Coolest Place to Fish
By Rocky Thompson on February 10th, 2012It is legal in the great state of Vermont to shoot pike with guns. From March 25 to May 25 gunmen are legally able to trade out bait for bullets and blast away at fish in the lakes.
“This has been going on as far back as the early 1900s,” explains John Hall, Information Manager for Vermont Fish and Wildlife. According to Hall, the Native Americans in the Missiscoy Bay region have always used guns and spears as a means for extracting fish, primarily northern pike. “Fish shooting has been a legislative statute on the books for many years.”
Indeed. I can think of a few other laws that were on the books for several years that were overturned. Slavery, prohibition, and women not being allowed to vote all come to mind. I’m sure the folks with homes on these lakes in Vermont love hearing gunfire coming over the water all night while fisherfolk blast away in the beams of their bright lights.
