Downhill Racing on Snow, On Bikes

By Michael Frank, Adventure Journal on February 10th, 2012

If DH scares you maybe you’d fear it less entering this race series in Maine/New Hampshire. You bomb fairly tame terrain, and if you eat it you’re more apt to slide and, probably, wind up less broken than on dirt. Some caveats: Heats are run a la BMX, with three or four riders going at the gun en masse (top finishers are then sent down again against other top finishers), and most racers run spiked tires, so there is potential for puncture wounds in the event of a pileup. Hey, it wouldn’t be a sport if someone couldn’t get an eye put out.
