A former legislator and current dogsled racer is going to mush from northern Minnesota to the State Capitol in March to deliver a petition bent on protecting the Boundary Waters wilderness area from mining. You can still sign the online petition, which was put together by the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness.

“The history of sulfide mining is one of environmental disaster, and there is no evidence that mining for copper, nickel, and other non-ferrous (non-iron) metals from sulfide rock in Northern Minnesota can be done without harming Minnesota’s fresh water resources, fish, plants, wildlife and human health…”

Getting through the north woods shouldn’t be too hard, but I’m not sure what route he’ll take through downtown St. Paul. Maybe he’ll swap out his sled for a pair of Rollerblades when he hits the city streets. I suspect that would get some press coverage.
