What Yosemite Didn’t Say About Climbers on Half Dome
By Michael Frank, Adventure Journal on February 8th, 2012
The proposed 2012 scale back of permits for hikers on Half Dome doesn’t impact climbers, who are still free to walk off sans permit after scaling the giant monolith. The Access Fund makes it clear that park managers haven’t said anything about limiting the number of descenders off the rock in their proposed plan to reduce the number of hikers by 25 percent, but then…they haven’t said anything about climbing the rock at all. And since there’s constant stirring about a better way to manage the hordes, one might be to let climbers rappel via fixed anchors instead of waiting in the queue with everyone else. Or…even down climb the slab if, as some Wilderness advocates propose, the anchored walkway were removed at some point.
