Grand Canyon Now Accepting Pleas, Petitions, and Begging for River Permits

Rafting down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon is a once in a lifetime experience, all the more so because you need a highly coveted permit to do it unless you hire a guide — and even then the slots are scarce. So if you want to paddle it unguided, you need to plan ahead, as in a full year ahead: The National Park Service has just begun accepting applications for 2013 permits. They’ll award 449 of them via a weighted lottery. You have until February 22. Via Grand Canyon National Park.
