Are People Camping Less?

By Rocky Thompson on January 17th, 2012

According to a private study paid for by Coleman and a Montana company with the senseless name “Kampgrounds of America,” camping declined 10% in 2010. In 2010 40 million Americans camped out 515 million times, down from 2009. I suppose it’s a bit early for the 2011 figures, but if I had to guess, I’d say the fee-free days in National Parks and their record attendance will give a boost to 2011. Then again Kampgrounds of America probably isn’t interested in National Parks. The reasons people cited for less camping? Too much work.

I’ll admit it, I did less “Kamping” in 2010 than ever before. I have all this “Kamping” equipment, like a special metal stick that can roast 3 hot dogs at once, and a hand-crank powered stereo/tv/cell phone charger, but I can barely bring myself to “Kamp” 10 feet away from some other family’s mewling spawn. Maybe I should try “Bak-Pakin’”.
