Nome, Alaska Stranded in the Ice
By Rocky Thompson on January 16th, 2012It’s been a mild, snowless winter. At least in the lower 48. The town of Nome, Alaska has had a bit of cold. In fact, they’re cut off from the rest of the world and running out of heating fuel. After a brutal slog with help from a Coast Guard icebreaker, a Russian tanker carrying emergency fuel managed to pull into town last week. This is good news as the residents of town won’t freeze to death, and also for all the folks riding snow bikes and dog sleds in the Iditarod since it always terminates in Nome.
