Brits Okay Locator Beacons, Brace for Onslaught of False SOS’s

The personal locator beacons that have become commonplace in North America can for the first time be used in the United Kingdom. The devices have long been used by boaters and aviators, but weren’t authorized on land until now. “If we can take advantage of today’s technology to help manage and minimise the risk to rescuers and help speed up the whole rescue process, in an emergency, there is no doubt we can save lives that might otherwise be lost,” said one constable. Well, yeah. They’ve been pretty darn effective on the west side of the Atlantic.
