Helicopter Spots Lost Hiker’s Cell Phone Light

By Rocky Thompson on January 3rd, 2012

A man lost in a state park in Maryland wondered onto a trail that he thought would lead him back to a trailhead but instead took him deeper into the park. With darkness closing in and no idea where he was, he dialed 911 on his cell phone and sat back to wait for help. Police were talking to him trying to find his location while their helicopter flew overhead, but they couldn’t zero in using just his phone’s GPS. Instead he turned his phone on flashlight mode and held it up until someone using night vision equipment on the chopper picked it out in the mess of trees. Instead of flying him and his dog out, the police lowered two firefighters who showed him the right path out of the woods.
