Lyme Disease Sucks. A new Drug May Help Make it Less Evil
By Michael Frank, Adventure Journal on December 23rd, 2011
It’s a mild winter so far in much of the East, and that means one thing for the coming spring: More ticks, and more Lyme disease for hikers, climbers, mountain bikers and everyone else who lives for the outdoors. Yay. If there’s any good news it’s that the secondary infections caused by ticks could soon be a thing of the past. In case you don’t know it, Lyme isn’t the only danger. Ticks transmit borrelia pathogens that can damage joints and organs. Often undetected, one bite from a tick, can introduce and spread the bacteria throughout the entire body. But a new gel applied to the location of the bite will off the bacteria as long as you’re able to smear the goo on within the first few days of being bitten.
