Rare Cat Spotted in Arizona by Man Who Wants to Kill It

A recent story about spotting jaguars in Arizona in the wild grabbed us because…c’mon, jaguars, in Arizona. That’s rad! And no, not the sports cars driven by cougars in Scottsdale…these are genuine big cats that along with ocelots are endangered and the biggest felines you’ll find in the Western Hemisphere. If you’re very lucky, you’ll find them in the remotest part of the state, too, though more often they stay south of the border. The author notes that the jaguar in question (later verified by wildlife officials) was treed by a number of dogs…under the employ of a man who hunts mountain lions for sport.
Wild. Is there historical precedent for this? Were jaguars once more common in present-day U.S. territory?
(BTW, the title is funny, but I don’t think Fenn was interested in killing the jaguar, even if he does run mountain lion hunts).
Agreed, the title is misleading… He hunts mountain lions; he’d go to jail for hunting endangered jaguars.
