A video shot by BBC in Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta that was excerpted from the Beeb’s Frozen Planet series went viral on YouTube. The footage shows a pack of wolves struggling to take down a bison calf when a much larger buffalo mows the smaller calf down from behind. It looks like an act of mercy, if you anthropomorphize what you’re watching, and that’s what a lot of viewers’ comments suggested, prompting response from the scientific community that too many of us are divorced from the wilder world — that we should know that in the animal kingdom there’s not necessarily “logic” at work and sure as heck nothing remotely like mercy.
