What do you Think It Costs to Build a Backcountry Bridge for Equestrians and Mountain Bikers?

By Rocky Thompson on November 18th, 2011

The Backcountry Horsemen of Washington are building a backcountry bridge along a trail at Mount St. Helens. It’s about three miles from the trailhead and the construction materials will need to be flown in with a helicopter while the tools can be carried in by horse. So how much? It’s $62,000. If you understand government inefficiency the sum is shockingly low, but if you’ve ever climbed over a couple knocked down trees to get across a creek, it might seem kind of high. Buy me 30 new mountain bikes with that $62k and I’ll convince 29 other people to help me ride out there and build it ourselves. Though I cannot be held responsible for any horses falling into the creek.
