Warning: Bear Patches Possible in Early Season

Early snows have prompted a cautious soft opening to the season at Anchorage’s tiny Hilltop ski area — with lots of signage warning of bear activity, since at least four different sets of brown- and black bear tracks were found by groomers in the last few weeks. This is unusual because most years skiing doesn’t typically start until Thanksgiving, and by then bears have gone into hibernation.
