Government of the People? Not so Much in Alaska.

By Rocky Thompson on November 2nd, 2011

Last week the State of Alaska sued to invalidate the results of a voter initiative that was held to stop a massive gold and copper mine. Residents of the area that would be affected by the mine voted 280-246 to ban the mining, which they say would destroy prime salmon habitat.

This case is not about state support for or against a Pebble Mine project,” Attorney General John Burns said in a statement. “It is about upholding the state’s constitutional authority and responsibility to evaluate whether, on balance, development of Alaska’s resources is beneficial to all Alaskans.”

Ah, the constitutional authority to drop a mine in a town that could suffer a devastating effect on its environment and economy. Oh well, Alaska’s big. I’m sure they can move to the second best salmon habitat in the state.

Citizens of Alaska can brag to their grandchildren, saying “Yeah, we screwed up paradise and the oil’s already gone”.
