I read a fantastic New York Times story a while back about a war photographer who talked about the field. He was injured and lost his legs, and his editor paid him a visit. The editor asked why he keeps going to war after war, and among the reasons he said: “It becomes your identity in so many ways. This is my identity. This is all I’m known for. Nobody sends me out to go shoot beautiful pictures for travel articles, you know?” I couldn’t help but think, they know he can shoot photos, why not send him to the Caribbean for a break?

In the Times last week, they ran a photo story on The Lens about one war photographer who has found a balance. He’s covered several conflicts, and when he’s not shooting wars, he covers surfing. Check out the slideshow and article.
