Police responded to reports of a man screaming found the guy stuck in a tree with only his head and arms sticking out. He’d crawled into a hole at the base of the tree that went underground, and then he proceeded to climb the hollowed trunk getting stuck. Perhaps he was looking for lost miners’ gold or trying to find a new spelunking spot? Police said they had no idea why he was stuck in a tree and planned to suggest a mental health evaluation. If this story gets national attention it’s going to make a great Halloween costume.

Bloody Brawl at Chinese Kayak Race

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The hosts of the Chinese City Games were disqualified from the kayak race after getting into a fight. Another team intentionally rammed them, and they retaliated with their paddles swinging them at each other until the fight was broken up. One kayaker had to be hospitalized. I can’t wait for the unavoidable FUEL TV reality show.

National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis has issued a Call to Action to prepare the service for its centennial in 2016. He’s looking for a methodic approach. For example, he points out that though the significant historical accomplishments of African Americans and Hispanics have been mighty, only 3% of the National Historic Landmarks have heralded them. Maybe it’s time to add one more giant head to Mount Rushmore? Also, it’s the centennial in 2016? It’s time to start planning the party.

The Goodwin Project (Childbirth Included)

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The Goodwin Project casts itself as more of an art project than a movie. After watching the trailer I can see why. I read that there was a childbirth in the trailer before I watched it, but no worries, it’s not like the one your science teacher had you watch when you were in 9th grade. I’m looking forward to the finished product. It’s a soulful, stirring piece that casts the ocean as an all important force on Earth, and I’m fond of the music and editing. If only I could figure out a way for Hurley to pay for me and my girlfriend to spend years traveling to the planet’s wild places to make a film. (Maybe I should work on getting her pregnant.)

All-around rockstar and Backcountry.com Athlete Steph Davis made CNBC’s list of “You Get Paid To Do That?” She shared the spotlight with some beer brewers, photographers for Victoria’s Secret and National Geographic folks. It’s an odd group. Yes, Steph Davis does make a living rock climbing and wingsuit jumping, and I’m sure she’s happy that her life decisions put her on that list instead of CNBC’s list of people who have turned down Playboy.
