Elwha Dam Explosions

By Rocky Thompson on October 17th, 2011

Like many members of my gender I harbor a quiet love for explosives and guns. Let’s face it; it’s this underlying interest that half of the movies out of Hollywood are trying to tap into. So it was with great interest that I watched the use of some magical explosives to loosen the bedrock of the Elwha Dam. Here you have a huge explosion AND something that’s helping the environment - a perfect blend of raw power and greenness. The explosion almost looks CGI; anyone know what’s going on with the shot of light towards the ground right before it goes off? Find more on the Elwha Dam removal here.

That flash of light is the detonation cord. It’s basically high explosive in a thin plastic tube. It’s used to set of larger explosives (the ones buried in the ground).
