Please Don’t Pee on the Trail

By Rocky Thompson on July 11th, 2011

Officials in Olympic National Park think that hikers who urinate alongside popular trails are creating miles-long salt licks that may be responsible for attracting mountain goats that have harassed and even killed one hiker. To test the theory they’re closing a couple popular trails for a week or two, and then asking hikers not to pee while hiking. If they can’t hold it in after drinking a couple tallboys of Olympia, then they’re asked to walk 200 feet off the trail or use a bottle that they can carry out. Or, I suppose, they could use the privies built along the trail.

I knew a guy who was backpacking in the Beartooths and had a couple goats following him around – whenever he would do his business the goats would go lick at it. I guess they just followed for the 5 days of his trip. Kinda sick…

Just wondering, if the pee-theory proves correct, what are the proposed actions?

You cannot pee in a composting toilet, which is what a privy is. Whoever suggested that is a freaking idiot! You will have a much worse problem then being attacked by a mountain goat if you do that. You should know something about what you are talking about before you post.

Looks like you stand, I mean sit corrected Jennifer:

    priv·y/ˈprivē/
Noun: A toilet located in a small shed outside a house or other building; outhouse.

Write a comment… What good would a composting toilet be if you can’t pee in it. Hardly anyone does number 2 without also doing number 1, LOL
