Palm Springs ‘Rescue Box’ for Lost Hikers

By Rocky Thompson on May 31st, 2011

A 63-year-old hiker set out on a Palm Springs trail with two liters of water early in the morning. By afternoon he made it up to about 6,000ft before feeling too fatigued to continue, and then he ran out of water when he was back down around $2,500ft. Fortunately, he stumbled on a ‘rescue box’ that volunteers had cached on the trail last year.  In it he found water, a cell phone and food. Man, hiking trails in Palm Springs sound really nice. He called his wife than 911 with the phone that apparently still had a working battery, and then waited until a helicopter came for him.

He became too exhausted to continue as he was hiking UPHILL? He had no thought to turn around and go back down? They should have just left him!
