Dealing with Asian Carp

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Two young men from Peoria, Illinois have developed a way to deal with the influx of Asian Carp crowding their rivers. Their method does not seem wise, but you have to hand it to them for their ingenuity.

I was thinking he was going to sink straight to the bottom with all that metal tied to him when he jumped off the back of the boat. This guy’s going to end up slicing his arm off and having a hard time explaining what happened at the hospital. Also, what are all those trees doing in the middle of their river? (Warning: Contains country music.)

Most Inspirational Ski Video of 2011

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Those “ski naked” days in spring where the locals own the hill aren’t much more than huge booze-fests for the 19-year-olds who took a year off after high school to concentrate on skiing and drugs. Need proof? Check out this inspirational ski video. I have no idea where it was shot or who was behind it, but I feel safe in my knowledge that beer was somehow involved.

Around the World via the Poles

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

A man named Ray Chaplin hopes to circumnavigate the globe under human power. Instead of going along the equator and sticking to relatively consistent weather, he’ll try to cut across the globe from top to bottom going through the North and South Poles. He’ll paddle, bike, ski or, well, walk or swim, I guess. How long will this take? He’s saying it’ll be over in 80 weeks. The SHOVA 360 expedition kicks off this August.

The Grand Canyon and Uranium Mining

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Question: Should we mine near the Grand Canyon for uranium or go ahead and just fill the canyon up with trash? Think it over. Take your time.

The Grand Canyon is in the crosshairs of mineral developers, and they’re after uranium that could be put to good use in future international disasters. From now until May 4th the Department of the Interior’s website is asking to hear from us regarding how we feel about destroying the earth for temporary energy gain.

Motorist Survives Plunge into Grand Canyon

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

A 21-year-old man was found on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon standing by the side of the road. He reported to authorities that he’d accidentally driven off the road and over the edge. They spotted his car about 200 feet below the rim of the canyon, wedged against a tree. If he was texting while driving this incident could be used in a public service announcement no problem. Now the Park Service is tasked with figuring out how to get the car off the canyon’s floor.

“Free” Soloing with a Net

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

National Geographic is making a push towards more dynamic outdoor sports. Their current issue features big time free soloers in Yosemite, and they have a Fringe Element feature showing things like kayaking tidal races and this one, new to me - climbing with a trapeze net stretched below you. I suppose setup would take longer, but it beats falling without a net. It’s like deep-water soloing but you don’t get wet. I’m going to do the same thing, but instead I’m going to use a massive ball pit like the one from Chuck E. Cheese.

Colorado Statue of Nude Climber is Beheaded

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

The controversial nude rock climber in Silt, Colorado, a 5-ton sculpture created by a local has had its head chopped off. So far there have been no ransom demands. Some locals had voiced loud opposition to the piece, which shows a climber’s butt. They went so far as to drape a pair of underwear over the climber. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 award for anonymous tips (a great chance to practice your British accent as well).
