Snowbiking the Alps

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Is snowbiking BMX? Is it snowboarding for confused teens? Does anyone care? No, no, and only confused teens. This bizarre video is exactly the kind of thing you’d expect to come out of a French resort. I can’t wait to see a guy running downhill chasing his runaway snow bike.

Endurance Athletes Live Longer?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

A new study found that mice forced to run three times a week on a treadmill lived longer than mice that didn’t. That’s right…mice that exercise live longer than mice that don. Did I just blow your mind? *Sigh*

Other mice in the study were given diet pills without exercise, and they didn’t fare nearly as well as the exercising mice. Though, to be fair, they also got cool Lil’ Rascal scooters and oxygen tanks when they got older, so it balanced out in the end.

No Experience Required: Kayaking Vancouver to Alaska

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Five friends paddle five-hundred miles over five weeks from Vancouver to Alaska. Only one of them had spent much time in a kayak, and they did it without any injuries (plus they made this short, funny movie).

Lost Snowboarders Set Tree on Fire

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Smoking saves lives. Three snowboarders used a lighter and empty pack of cigarettes to light a tree on fire after they became lost out of bounds at Bogus Basin on Sunday. They called police from a cell phone at about 5pm, and rescuers called the unsuccessful search off at 8:30pm for the night. As soon as the rescuers settled back into their homes, they got a call that a tree was on fire near the hill. They found the cold but happy bros, and helped them snowshoe out 2.5 miles to safety. The article ends with this hat tip to the snowboarders: Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue said the men did everything right to make it home safely. ….well, yeah, if you don’t count ducking a rope and riding out of bounds and then getting lost.

N/A Beer Sports Drinks

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

A non-alcoholic beer sports drink? I thought that’s pretty much what Michelob Ultra was. Turns out that stuff has a bit of alcohol. The German brewer Erdinger is now offering something called “Alkoholfrei” and marketing it to the sports crowd. I don’t speak German, but I’m pretty sure Alkoholfrei means ‘unleaded’ in English.

I love beer, but there isn’t a chance I would fill a CamelBak with it for a bike ride. Well, at least I wouldn’t fill it with N/A beer.

Jackson Hole Drops Charges on 78-year-old Uphill Skier

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Jackson Hole Resort will not press charges on a 78-year-old man who was arrested at the hill recently. His crime?

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort officials said Ronald Fleck was arrested Feb. 5 after ski patrol members spent 3 ½ hours attempting to convince the man to turn around while he was trying to ski uphill to watch his granddaughter’s ski race, the Jackson Hole Daily reported Monday.

I absolutely love how Ronald Fleck would not just turn around and ski back down the hill, and he forced ski patrol to argue with him for three-and-a-half hours. And then when he still wouldn’t turn around, the police had to be called in to drag this senior off the slopes. Way to stick with it, Ronald. Sure, Jackson isn’t pressing charges, but that’s the least they could do…actually, on second thought, the least they could have done was to just let him ski up and see his granddaughter’s ski race.

Rocket Skiing It Is Not

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Sweet James Bond soundtrack on this thing, though I doubt Bond would be caught dead in rear-entry boots. Sergei Khvalin of Russia straps a paragliding propeller to his back and enjoys the peaceful sounds of nature while drag racing go karts up and down winter streets.

Uranium Mining Near Grand Canyon?

Monday, February 21st, 2011

he National Park Service has opened a public commenting period asking for input on whether they should allow uranium mining near the park. Let’s see? Do we take a chance at permanently polluting a beautiful place for the short term gain of fossil fuels that will become nuclear waste just so I can leave my plasma TV on for my tiny dogs while I’m at work, or do we tell them to get lost? It’s a tough decision. Maybe we should suggest that there’s been a lot of erosion in the Grand Canyon so if they find any uranium just lying on the surface they can take it.

Sluff Management with Xavier De Le Rue

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Sticking with the theme of brutal crashes, here’s a clip of Xavier De Le Rue riding some impressive lines and then taking one punishing fall over a sheet of ice.

Thanks Dave
