A Bad Weekend for Midwestern Resorts
By Rocky Thompson on January 17th, 2011Alpine Valley in Wisconsin had to evacuate 84 skiers from a chairlift that broke down and couldn’t be restated. It took several hours, but the weather was a balmy 29F, so Wisconsinites weren’t complaining too much.
Big Powderhorn Mountain in Upper Michigan had an even worse weekend, with their iconic lodge catching fire. The nearest fire hydrant was a mile away making it difficult for fire crews to fight the blaze. “It was hot. I parked the engine a thousand feet away. I thought it was going to melt the paint on the truck,” said Josh Ludtke, a firefighter for the Ironwood Township Fire Department.
The lodge was completely destroyed, though the resort says they’ll still be open through the holiday weekend.

Rocky – as funny as jokes about Wisconsin are, the Alpine Valley where the chairlift thing happened was in OHIO! /facepalm
Damn, there’s an Alpine Valley, OH? I didn’t even know it snowed that far south.
