Potential Climbing Fee Increase at Denali National Park

By Rocky Thompson on November 8th, 2010

Park officials are considering an increase in climbing fees on Mount McKinley. Currently it costs $200 for each climbing permit, and the fees in Denali were last raised from $150 in 2005. The interesting thing is that for each Denali climber, the park spends about $1,200. Those costs cover staff, mountaineering programs, and…rescues. I guess if we don’t want people to have to pay for their own rescue operations, then we all have to chip in.

I don’t want to pay for the idiot mistakes of someone with a death wish who thinks it’s ok to take a few chances to peak out on their dream climb. Repeat after me: “My trip insurance includes sickness and rescue coverage.”

If you’re not prepared to pay for your own rescue, don’t go out and play. I don’t care if you’re on Denali or on a Flatirons dayhike in Boulder. No more government bail outs!
