Greater Migrations

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Has anyone been watching Great Migrations? It doesn’t quite have the grandeur of the Ken Burns’ National Parks PBS documentary or the Planet Earth, whatever channel that was on. I’ve caught clips here and there of Great Migrations, but I have yet to sit through an entire episode. Should be a big deal, I’m sure it’ll be in repeat on the various cable programs for the next several years.

Jackson Hole’s Biggest Ever Opening Weekend

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

One of these guys had been in the tram line since 11:30pm Opening Day’s Eve. I don’t understand why he didn’t just start walking to the top of the hill at 11:30pm and then get the first run off the tramdock right as the first tram was pulling in. Regardless, looks like the Wyoming season’s off to a good start.

Terrifying Small Town Sheriff in Idaho

Monday, November 29th, 2010

A small town sheriff in Idaho is insisting that the ‘SSS’ in his “.308 SSS Wolf Pack Raffle” stands for ‘safety, security, and survival’ and not ‘shoot, shovel, and shut up’ as animal rights groups and everyone else in the town is claiming. Apparently the ‘SSS’ designation is a popular feature on bumper stickers for sociopaths who advocate the elimination of all wolves. Hippies take note-do not try to hitchhike through Idaho County.

Grizzly Creeps up on BBC Crew

Monday, November 29th, 2010

A crew from BBC shooting footage and talking about bears for an episode of Deep Into the Wild had a bit of a surprise. A bear. They contained their surprise fairly well. Surprise birthday parties must be pretty dull in England.

Deer Jumps Into ‘Turkey Trot’

Monday, November 29th, 2010

A New Jersey deer leapt into the fray during a morning turkey trot last week.

Apparently, the deer was confused and excited when all the people were running together.”

It ran into a 7-year-old girl who was knocked down. The good news is that she wasn’t hurt, and received a fantastic lesson on wildlife and urban sprawl.

The 12,000 Mile Canoe Adventure

Friday, November 26th, 2010

For two years Don Starkell and his sons paddled a custom, handmade 21-foot canoe from Winnipeg, Canada to Brazil. They made the 12,181 mile trip completely self supported, dodging drug runners, robbers, and pirates on the way. At the end of the expedition, Don turned his journey’s notes into a book, Paddle to the Amazon: The Ultimate 12,000-Mile Canoe Adventure. Hopefully he remembered to sign a permission slip for his boys to be out of class for so long as well.
