Climbing into an (Erupting) Volcanic Crater

By Rocky Thompson on October 6th, 2010

Climber Drew Bristol dropped into an active volcano, getting himself within 100m of molten rock. He pulled on a special futuristic suit for the stunt. How did his rope not melt at that temp? I’m not sure what he used, but I wouldn’t have recommended putting much weight on it while hanging over the lava. Well, regardless of what kind of rope it was, I hope this video serves as a warning to the Gearheads that one is coming back on warranty soon.

I like how he’s not wearing a helmet (I think that’s what that thing is, chillin on his belt?). Clearly, if he were to fall from that ledge, it wouldn’t do much good.
