Canoeing Coast-to-Coast

By Rocky Thompson on September 30th, 2010

Twenty-four-year-old Alexander Martin just completed his six-month, coast-to-coast canoe trip from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. He did the solo trip in a 30lb Kevlar canoe, which he portaged over 800 miles across the dry parts of the country. He paddled mostly during the off season, including a frigid November in the Boundary Waters between Minnesota and Canada. While in the BWCA, he had to jump into the water after his boat once when it began floating away.

“It had been sleeting and snowing for a week so I knew if I got my clothes wet they would never dry. So I stripped naked and jumped in the lake and swam after my boat,” he said.

Wow, what an unpretentious guy! That’s pretty cool right there.

Thanks for linking to the Friends of the BWCAW! The story is indeed pretty impressive. Pretty neat that he found such solitude in the Boundary Waters, but not surprising considering November isn’t exactly considered a prime paddling month. :)

Wow, that’s awesome. As a 24 year old who spends much of my time dreaming of epic under-takings like this one, it’s so bittersweet to see people accomplishing so much while I’m only dreaming.
