Canoeing Coast-to-Coast

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Twenty-four-year-old Alexander Martin just completed his six-month, coast-to-coast canoe trip from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. He did the solo trip in a 30lb Kevlar canoe, which he portaged over 800 miles across the dry parts of the country. He paddled mostly during the off season, including a frigid November in the Boundary Waters between Minnesota and Canada. While in the BWCA, he had to jump into the water after his boat once when it began floating away.

“It had been sleeting and snowing for a week so I knew if I got my clothes wet they would never dry. So I stripped naked and jumped in the lake and swam after my boat,” he said.

Bear Corpse Dumped Outside California Grocery

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

In something out of a bad episode of CSI, or rather any episode of CSI, some lunatic in California rolled a dead black bear out of their vehicle in front of a busy strip mall near San Francisco. The dead 300lb bear had been shot in the shoulder, and authorities are puzzled about, well, everything. The white pickup truck dropped the bear in San Leandro (headquarters of North Face) before peeling out. That must have been one crazy bachelor party. Someone check TNF cell phone records in the area around the time the body was dumped - nice, this is like CSI.

The Provo Bros with some POV Ski Action

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The Provo brothers Ian and Neil both released some POV edits from last season. The shots are culled from some late season storms and both offer ample stokage for the coming season. In the above video, Neil is testing out a 2010/11 Rossignol board.  His brother’s riding some deep snow at The Canyons resort. Both with new videos in one week? It’s like they’re competing or something.

Thanks Kyle

Canada Gov’t Suing Blackcomb Mountain

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

This is such a bizarre story that I couldn’t ignore it. A woman was snowboarding Whistler/Blackcomb last year; she caught an edge, hit the ground and speed, and then slid over a cliff insuring her back, leg, and ribs. If I was a Canadian and found myself lying on the rocks in this situation, I assure you that while wiggling my toes to check for feeling, I would be thinking, “Thank god I have health insurance.” And the woman received the treatment she needed, but now the government is coming after the ski resort for having cliffs in the first place. Man, you’d think socialized medicine would mean the end of frivolous lawsuits, but that’s not the case. It’s not like ski resorts say, “Hey, we all have health insurance, let’s just cut corners and make everything really unsafe since it’s free to get fixed up at the hospital.”
