New Evidence Suggests Mallory and Irving Killed by Storm on Everest

By Rocky Thompson on August 11th, 2010

The disappearance of George Mallory and Andrew Irving on their June 8, 1924 Everest summit bid has been a thing of mystery. Sort of. We know they went up and never came back…there’s really not that much mystery. But people point out that we don’t know exactly what happened, and instead of accepting that small mystery, they’ve dug into the day’s weather reports.

A potential answer to that mystery came in an old sheaf of papers at the Royal Geographical Society in London when a researcher noticed the precipitous drop in pressure of those days. The pressure drop actually mirrors that of one on Everest in 1996 that preceded a furious storm that claimed eight people.

We should probably warn Toots and the Maytals fans about the danger.

Wait, so it took us like 90 years to figure out they died because of a snow storm on Everest? Damn, I had my money on scurvy, but thought kindness might have killed them as well.
