Man Riding a Jetski from London to New Zealand
By Rocky Thompson on August 4th, 2010
A 51-year-old airline pilot is attempting to ride his jetski from London to New Zealand. He departed from the Parliament Building in London yesterday, and is enroute 12 hours per day for the next 19,883 miles. Brutal, and frankly, kind of messed up.
His risky adventure has not been welcomed by his wife which calls him “idiot” for trying to do such thing but, it seems that it doesn’t takes much effect on him while he is preparing for the trip. He is starting his attempt to break the record for the longest ride of personal watercraft tomorrow and he is planning to finish the trip in November.
One of his goals is to raise awareness of cancer diseases after he has been battling with skin cancer for a while.
I can’t say I disagree with his wife. How do you refuel your jetski in the middle of the ocean? If you want to raise awareness for skin cancer - a noble cause - why are you riding a jetski for nearly 20,000 miles? So many things about this story don’t make sense. I’m waiting for them to announce that it’s a viral marketing campaign for Vitamin Water.

I actually work at a cancer care clinic. Oddly enough, this is not the most bizarre or unrelated stunt I’ve seen done to “raise awareness.” Good intentions, but I can’t help but be skeptical of anyone who can’t think of a clearer goal…are you donating money? speaking at survivorship events after you get back? sticking a “cancer sucks” flag on the jetski?
I’m not sure these “raise awareness” campaigns really accomplish much, despite the good intentions. Are there many people who would be interested in this stunt who aren’t aware of skin cancer? Also, why is the cited article written in slightly broken english?
Kenny Powers doesn’t need to answer your stupid questions. Cancer sucks, jetskis rule. End of story.
Hope he packs a lot of sunscreen…
