Plastiki Nears Voyage’s End

By Rocky Thompson on July 21st, 2010

The voyage of the Plastiki is near its end. The boat will finish its 8,000 mile, 127-day journey when it docks in Sydney later this week. If you haven’t read about the Plastiki or its voyage to raise awareness about the massive Eastern Garbage Patch in the middle of the Pacific, you can see their website, or this great Vice series on the Pacific gyre’s garbage farm. Maybe I’ll make a boat out of used plastic bottles and take a few months off work to sail across the ocean, but where could I find a bunch of used plastic water bottles?

I wonder what they will do when it when the trip’s over - haul it to the recycling bin?

The way this is worded makes me think there is some evil western garbage patch (or maybe that just my warped planetary view as an American). God help us if there is, thought at this rate I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem to build one in a few years.
