12-Year-Old Climbs 50 State Highpoints in 50 Days

By Rocky Thompson on July 15th, 2010

Twelve-year-old Matt Moniz will climb to the highest point in each of the 50 states in 50 days. Yesterday he left for Hawaii after hitting #49 in Montana, and by now, unless his flight was delayed, he should be done. And it’s only halfway through summer break. Maybe he should try all 50 lowest points next. This site has all the state’s high points - ol’ Timms Hill in Wisconsin at 1,951ft was a hell of a hike back in 7th grade. I remember setting up high basecamp at 1,700ft. We had to have a picnic and wait for weather to move out, and then some lady with a stroller passed us.

This is getting a bit ridiculous. Youngest kid to climb this, first teenager to sail around that. Gotta wonder what role the parents are playing in all of this.

The parents are paying for it all.

My kid is the first one allowed to ride on my back while hiking (none of the other kids are cute enough). And she will have 4 beer festivals under her belt by the end of summer. Not bad for an 18 month old.
