Montana Man Hit by Log That Fell 250 Feet
By Rocky Thompson on July 14th, 2010
I’m not sure how I would react, nor do I know what would be the appropriate reaction to watching a log break loose 250 feet above your head. My instincts say RUN!, but what if you’re in dense forest or on a steep hillside? Do you get up close to the cliff instead, or would the log knock rocks free that would crush you? I guess I’d just make a run for it and hope for the best. Or maybe, I’d just stand where I am and try to get a feeling for where it’d fall, and then jump out of the way at the last second.
A 59-year-old man in Montana found himself on the wrong side of luck when a log fell 250 feet and hit him even though he’d taken cover. He was with two friends hiking the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest who were not injured. The man is in stable condition, but logs falling from high places is hardly limited to this national forest. Maybe I’ll just always run when I’m outside so it’s less likely things fall on me.

I find it more incredible that he was in Montana when he was hit by a log that fell 250 feet in Washington. I mean how far away do you have to go to take cover? Oh wait it was a 59-year-old Montana man. That makes more sense.
That’s pretty crazy, I’m definitely going to be more careful when walking under/next to cliffs. Might even come up with an anti-get hit by falling log plan before I head out next.
