The Next Youngest to Climb Everest?
By Rocky Thompson on June 9th, 2010
A friend of mine mentioned something about how it was going to be difficult not to buy his son a mountain bike the same day he was born. I understand that mentality. I felt a little uncomfortable when another guy introduced me to his newborn son, who was tucked away in a Mountainsmith lumbar pack, while skiing in the Colorado backcountry.
The story of a Nepalese Sherpa considering bringing a kid up Everest to break the ‘Youngest on Everest’ record makes me absolutely cringe. I understand that Pemba Dorje Sherpa doesn’t have the benefit of running his ideas past a PR agency before talking to the press, but bringing and 11- or 12-year-old up the side of a mountain that’s killed so many able-bodied adults is far from wise. This would fit well into Adam Riser’s Everest: A Cynical View of the Latest ‘Firsts’ story.
