Wolf Killed in Illinois

By Rocky Thompson on March 19th, 2010

A trail cam in Illinois caught a picture of the first live wolf to traipse into the state in modern times. Unfortunately a hunter saw the animal a short while later and, mistaking it for the biggest coyote of all time, shot it. The DNA testing is being conducted so they can make sure the animal was a wolf and not some hybrid coyote/donkey. If it is a wolf, it would technically be an endangered animal in Illinois, but the state would not prosecute the man who illegally shot it. Good to know ‘ignorance of the law’ is now considered a reasonable defense in Illinois courts.

I thought I saw a wolf in SE Illinois a few weeks ago. Memory is fuzzy - how would I know the difference between a wolf and a coyote? It would have been the biggest coyote I ever saw - about the size of a german shepherd, but not much bigger. Definitely wild…

Kind of like “I didn’t see him” defends you from running over bicyclists.

In some other nations, the driver is told “Then you shouldn’t be driving. Go to jail.”
