Rock Climber Dies in Fall While Climbing at Night

By Rocky Thompson on March 18th, 2010

A Japanese man who worked as a foreign officer before deciding to settle in South Africa and start his own business died while climbing in the middle of the night. The poor guy was so slammed with work that the only time he could ever get away and actually go climbing was well after dark. The article doesn’t make clear what he was doing roped up by himself, but he might have worked out a self-belay system since it’s tough to find climbing partners for middle-of-the-night trips. The guy was no slouch-he was 54 years old and had been climbing for 30 years. This all points to one thing:  Quit your job and climb fulltime. It might be the only way to survive.

Eat, sleep, climb. Well, forget sleep. Eat, work, climb. What is that Japanese word for dying from overwork?

    Karoshi.

And I thought getting a little exercise and fresh air after work would be better than getting blotto and passing out on the train platform. Silly gaijin.
