Avalanche at Snowmobile Rally ‘Human Triggered’

By Rocky Thompson on March 16th, 2010

A couple guys who thought they’d pull some badass moves at a loosely organized snowmobile rally in the Canadian Rockies are in a bit of trouble.

An avalanche that killed two people on Saturday at an informal snowmobile rally in Canada’s Rocky Mountains might have been set off by three daredevil sledders who apparently unleashed a deadly wall of snow on up to 200 people below, witnesses said Sunday.

Ouch. That’s a tough one to bear. Luckily a lot of the snowmobilers were carrying avalanche beacons and their compatriots were able to dig them out before the police arrived. Two men died. It’s always a sad case when people die in an avalanche, but misery is compounded when you can point a finger and say someone ‘might’ have done it. The police and coroners are investigating the deaths, but they haven’t yet indicated whether criminal charges will be filed.

200 people watching highmarking in a obvious terrain trap in high avalanche danger. Half the people didn’t have shovels or probes which makes their donated beacons useless. If your going to put on something like this make safety first.
